Ready for our close-ups April 21, 2008

I have to admit, I was a little bit embarrassed to be looking forward to the engagement photos _so much_.  It felt a little cheesy…  But as my colleague Lee put it: “Sometimes things that are cheesy are, because they’re also great.”

I was also nervous.  Two hours of picture-taking?  What would we _do_ for two hours?  If it hadn’t been at eight o’clock in the morning, we could have had a picnic.  If we’d had a dog, we could have run around looking puppylicious.  But…

It was SO MUCH FUN!  Katy was great, and just followed us around the playground, snapping photos.  She asked us to talk about our plans, and then told us to look at each other, not at her, while we talked.  We talked about how we met, our mutual friends, and told funny stories about our courtship.  She took photos at the bus stop (“Very New York”) and then we went up to the Cloisters.  It was a gray day, so the sky wasn’t great behind us, but all the flowering trees and early tulips and daffodils were in bloom, so there were so many amazing colors up there.  We even laid on our stomachs behind a bright yellow bush, peeking through it (this would be, I think, the “cheesiest” shot, but I think it will also turn out really cute.)  We kissed a lot!  And I kept trying to tickle Matt, which I found very funny.

Katy ended up taking nearly 700 photos!  Which is exciting, because surely there are some really good ones in there.  She says she spends a lot of time working with them, to make them really really good, so I can’t wait to see them.  Can’t wait to share them…

Of course, the risk of my LJ syndication method is that people will comment there instead of here. So you might want to check that — or try to encourage people to comment in one place instead of the other.

But to speak directly to your post here: yay! I remember when L. and I had our engagement photos taken. I still had a buzz cut from when a number of us shaved our heads in solidarity with a friend who had a growth in his brain (turned out to be benign).

But photo sessions are just fun. It would be nice to wander around NYC and look for those moments, those still, perfect moments — and then be in them with the one you love!
